Logbooks 11 Logbooks The preflight really starts with the paperwork. In addition to the certificates required of the pilot, the airplane has a plethora of its own. I start with the logbooks. The FAA requires that every aircraft owner maintains a current set of airframe and engine logbooks. These logbooks do not have to be carried in the airplane, but must be readily available. What should be evident in these logbooks? What do you look for in order to prove your aircraft was airworthy, at least at the time of the logbook entry?

It is probably best to use a written checklist so the procedure never varies. I teach my students to arrive at the aircraft with their eyes wide open. If he or she has given the aircraft a thorough overview while approaching the plane, the pilot should recognize any major problem (including missing aircraft parts) by the time they arrive at the tie-down. Additionally, it is wise to leave the aircraft tied down during the preflight until you’re ready to climb inside. This precaution helps avoid some interesting square dancing between you and the aircraft in case of unexpected, sudden winds caused either by nature or other aircraft.
