He began taking a correspondence course in law which would help him whether he stayed in the force or left it to go to a law school after his three-year term of service was completed. As far as he could see, the future as a constable was not too bright. The force was small and their duties were confined mainly to part of Western Canada, the Yukon, and the Northwest Territories. In the Yukon, for example, there were approximately forty all ranks, and the opportunities for promotion were limited.

Megantic, and on 12 June began the voyage to the United Kingdom. It was nine years since Pearkes had arrived in Canada as an eighteen-year-old youth. He had seen more of Canada than most Canadians and had worked as hard under difficult conditions as anyone. He was not returning home with a fat purse as he had once hoped. On the other hand, he was in the army, which was what he had wanted to do even before he left England. The ten-day trip on the Megantic was uncomfortable. Troops were crowded on board, mealtimes were brief with many sittings, the hammocks were awkward, and entertainment was almost non-existent.
